On Saturday, April 25, 2009 Lady Gilmore and I attended the 21st Annual Curtis Wilson Scholarship Fund Dinner. We met a student by the name of Tommie Love. He is similar to Christopher in three regards. He is young, gifted, and Black. Tommie received a scholarship and plans to attend graduate school. Here is Tommie's own words:
Tommie Lee Love Jr., an English major at Cleveland State University is, above all, a lover of words. This is why he works for the Vindicator, a multicultural University magazine which displays the many and varied voices of the community in all their splendor. As Features Editor of the Vindicator, he has come into contact with quite a few apt and intelligent writers, and is grateful for the experience. Tommie will graduate soon with a Bachelors degree, then then go immediately on to get his Masters.
Tommie is not only a student of English, but also of Religion and Metaphysics. His original intent was to major in Metapsychology, but finding that no one knew what in the world that was, he switched his major to English – and is not sorry for having done so. He is always looking for a new book to read, and finds cordial debate to be edifying.
In the future, Tommie intends to become an English professor. Or, failing that, he will study Urban Permaculture. His love for English only just surpasses his love for the study of community cohesion and sustainability.
Finally, Tommie is grateful to his mother for having given him an ardent passion for reading. Without that, none of what he has accomplished in his life would be possible.
